Situação

Treasure Island is located in the Sobradinho Resevoir on the São Francisco river in the state of Bahia, Northeast Brazil. It has a surface area of 4,200 km2 - about 1,000,000 acres or the equivelent of all the water surface of the state of Georgia. The hydro-electric plant has 6 generator turbines (1,050 megawatts total) and regulates waterlevels and provides irrigation. Its main function is to supply water to the other resevoirs down stream. It is rather shallow (avg 35 ft) so it has a high evaporation rate and low power output for the volume of water that passes. As a result the level is sacificed for the more efficient plants. This leads to rather drastic level changes during the year.

Northeast Brazil is a semi-arrid region with little rainfall. It is home to the cactus, scrubbrush, and LOTS of goats.		 Ilha do Tesouro é situado na represa de Sobradinho no rio São Francisco na Bahia. O espelho d'água é de 4.200km2 - quase do tamanho do Distrito Federal. A usina hidro-elétrica tem 6 turbinas (1.050 megawatts total), regula o nível d'água, e irriga a região. A função principal da represa é armazenar água para as outras usinas. Por ser rasa, 10 metros na média, tem uma alta índice de evaporação e baixa eficiência de produção de energia em função da quantidade de água passando pelas tubinas. O resultado é que a cota é sacrificada para as usinas mais eficientes e o nível d'água varia muito durante o ano.

O nordeste é uma região semi-árido com pouca chuva. É um lugar de cactos, caatinga, e MUITOS bodes.












History

História

At the end of the 70's, Baptist Mid-Missions missionaries in Remanso and Casa Nova, Bahia, obtained permission from CHESF to set up a camp on an island in the Sobradinho resevoir. After some research the present location was chosen. Many have given money and large quatntities of time to the development of this unique Christian campground. Harold Reiner, instrumental in the Iguatu camp for many years, and his son Tim were the ones primarily responsible for its building and running, joined later by another son, Doug.



The strain of running a remote camp and growth of other ministries coupled with other factors led the missionaries and other area leaders to consider moving the camp to mainland. Being also a regional project, the Northeast asked Byron Atha to move to the area and work in this ministry. Though relieved of the burden of responsibility, the other missionaries are still sacrificially involved in camping and Treasure Island.		 No final da década de 70, misionários de Baptist Mid-Missions em Remanso e Casa Nova, Bahia conseguiram permissão da CHESF para utilizar uma ilha na represa de Sobradinho para desenvolver um acampamento. Depois de pesquisar, escolheram o local atual. Muitos contribuiram dinheiro e quantidades enormes de tempo para desenvolver este acampamento cristão tão único. Haroldo Reiner, involvido no acampamento de Iguatu por muitos anos, e seu filho Timótio foram os pricipais responsaveis pela construção e andamento, junto com outro filho, Jota, depois.



A dificuldade de dirigir um acampamento de defícil acesso e o crescimento de outros ministérios - junto com outros fatores, dirigiu os missionários e obreiros da região a decidirem mudar o acampamento para terra firme. Sendo um projeto regional da missão, Byron Atha foi pedido a se mudar e assumir o ministério da ilha. A pesar de aliviados da responsibilidade, os demais missionários ainda estão involvidos sacrifíciamente em acampar e a Ilha do Tesouro.














Facilities

Instalações

In addition to LOTS of water, we have facilities for 150 campers (200 in a pinch). There are: a small kitchen, dining area, canteen, chapel, 3 public restroom blocks (2 with showers), 5 "chalets" with private baths, 3 suites, 3 blocks of 4 rooms, and 2 group houses. Many of the buildings are built with stone. We have generators for lighting and refrigeration, basketball/futsal court, nature trails, sand volleyball, tetherball and a soccer field.


We also have kayaks, a pedal boat, a sail dinghy (laser), zipline, two horses and two donkey and carts, rheas and livestock.

There are almost 500 acres to explore and almost 10 miles of river-front and a fair amount of native wildlife to observe.


Access is by boat (we have a 60' steel boat and several smaller ones), grass airstip, or, occasionally, by truck.		 Além de MUITA água, temos instações para 150 acampantes (200 estorando). Temos: uma pequena cozinha, refeitório, cantina, auditório, 3 blocos de sanitários (2 com chuveiros), 5 chalês com banheiro próprio, 3 suites, 3 blocos com 4 quartos, e 2 barracas para groupos. Muitos dos prédios são construídos de pedra. Temos um groupo gerador para iluminação e refrigeração, trilhas, quadra para basquete/futsal, vôlei de praia, tetherbol, campo para futebol e praias.

Temos caiaques, uma pedalinha, um veleiro (laser), tiro-laser, dois cavalos e dois jumentos e carroças (1 tipo charrete), emas e animais domésticos.

Temos 200 hectares para explorar e 6 km de beira-rio. Temos uma quantia razoável de animais selvagens para observar.


Acesso é através de barca (temos uma da aço com 18 metros e outras menores), campo de pouso para avião, ou, de vez em quando, por camioneta.
