Greetings from the hot Northeast Brazil.

The heat has arrived, but not the rains the heat usually brings. Our situation is not nearly as severe as what many of you experienced this summer, but our lake has dropped almost 9 meters (25 feet) in only 6 months because of a problem in a dam down river. In a million acre lake, that’s a lot of water. It has already interfered with a retreat and boat repair plans and the Island is now a peninsula. This is actually a window of opportunity, as I have wanted to dig a well on the Island but have not been able to get the heavy trucks there. This is a heavy financial decision, especially at this time and I ask that you pray for wisdom.

There have been a record number of retreats this year which is good. Most were bunched up in the last couple of months and that is not so good. I think it was just that several holidays fell close to the weekend. This is a secondary ministry for us, but sometimes it complicates the work at the church. Also in camp news, we have a new caretaker and he seems to be honest. But while he doesn’t steal, he doesn’t do much of anything else either. Pray for wisdom and patience in dealing with this unsaved man and for wise use of my time.

The baptism went well. It was a cool, windy day and we had to wade out a ways to find a good spot. I had never baptized "in the open" but it was a good experience and I didn’t lose anyone. All are still faithful in church, too, but I am concerned about the one who backed out. Pray for Carilene (ka-ree-lane-ee). She seems to be losing interest. We sent pictures of the baptism to those for whom we have e-mail addresses.

A more serious need involves a family in the church. You may recall that almost a year ago a member was hit by her unsaved husband during an argument. As a result of the aftermath, he made a decision, and, though never faithful in attendance, received good reports of change from his wife. I was assured that things were improving. Then a few weeks ago the husband came to talk to me. She has admitted to emotional involvement with another man and they have filed for separation. This has been a terrible blot on our small group and a major loss. We have placed her in church discipline, and if she doesn’t repent will be put out of the church. She admits she is wrong and that God will punish her but insists that He knows what she’s suffered and that He is with her. They have 3 girls in the 6 to 13 age range. Pray for repentance and restoration. What a beautiful witness to the power of God to change lives this could be. Pray with us.

Thank you for your prayers and concern regarding a health issue. The situation has stabilized but not gone away completely. Continue to pray for this problem and for wisdom whether to pursue it or live with it.

Yours in Him,

The Athas in Brazil,
Byron, Michele, William, Dalton, and Greyson
